- The name given to a designer's or designer sales associate's personal appearance at a store to preview the designer's latest collection and to sell merchandise. Begun in the late 1800s, designers including Charles Frederick Worth and Jean Patou would travel with their collections to promote business. More recently, Arnold Scaasi, Bill Blass, and Michael Kors became well known for the number of trunk shows they held. Trunk shows can create publicity for designers, as well as generate revenue. Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld trunk shows have set records, often bringing in millions of dollars in sales per show.
